God's Law and the New Covenant
Many of God’s people are being told that God’s law is done away with under the New Covenant. This is 100% false.
Under the New Covenant, God takes His laws and writes them on our heart and in our minds, He doesn’t do away with them.
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the new covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Hebrews 10:16-17 This is the new covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.
This was prophesied by God thousands of years ago.
Jeremiah 31:31-33 Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
In the New Covenant, God changes us when He cleanses us of our sin and gives us a new heart and a new spirit. He will put His Spirit in us and cause us to obey His laws and do the things that are pleasing to Him.
Ezekiel 36:25-28 Then I will put clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will make you clean from all your unclean ways and from all your false gods. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you. I will take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to follow My Laws and be careful to do what I tell you. And you will live in the land that I gave to your fathers. You will be My people, and I will be your God.
God will never do away with His law because His law not only defines righteousness, it also defines godly love, both of which are eternal.
Deuteronomy 6:25 We will be right with the Lord our God if we are careful to obey all the Law before Him, just as He told us.
Romans 2:13 Just to hear the Law does not make a man right with God. The man right with God is the one who obeys the Law.
Romans 7:12 So the law is holy. And what the law says is holy and right and good.
Romans 13:8-10 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
All the Torah and the prophets hang from how we love God and love our neighbor.
Matthew 22:36-40 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Torah and the Prophets.”
The sinner, who lives by their sinful nature, is the one who wants to do away with God's law, not God.
Romans 8:7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
Once God’s law is removed, the door is open for sin to come into the church. We see this happening with the change of God’s Sabbath, God’s people eating unclean animals, homosexuality and gay marriage in the church and so on.
The grace of God does not do away with God’s law, it does away with the stoning for breaking God’s law. Grace will actually teach us to obey God’s law by living righteous and godly lives out of a grateful and changed heart.
Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
God’s law is holy, right and good, there is no need to do away with it. The only ones who want God’s law done away with are those who are being controlled by their sinful nature, no matter how religious they may appear.
Romans 8:6-8 Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
If you’ve been cleansed by the blood of Christ and you love God through the teachings of Christ, it will be hard not to obey God’s law because God’s law defines love as God defines it.
1 John 5:2-3 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
None of what we just learned can happen if God’s law is done away with.
